JAMMU: Twenty eight persons, including a police head constable were shot dead by militants in the Kashmir valley over the week while curfew was relaxed in Srinagar and other major townships for 16 hours since Sunday night.

Ahead constable succumbed to injuries after he was shot at by militants outside his house in Shopian town Sunday night.

A youth was shot dead by militants in Rain war locality of Srinagar Monday.

The security forces drive against militants and subversives met with more success with the arrest of over 100 militants, including “hardcore ones,” from different parts of the valley since Sunday of these 65 were arrested from north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

So far, 500 militants and subversives have been arrested in the drive.

Meanwhile, state governor Jagmohan Monday announced rewards for anyone providing information leading to the arrest of militants. Rewards would also be given for recovery of weapons.

Those who recover weapons would be paid from Rs 3,000 to 10,000. The weapons include revolvers/pistols, AK47 Kalenshikoy and light machine gun. This has been done to provide incentive for speedy recovery of dangerous weapons, according to an official spokesman.
