JAMMU: About 20 young girls were injured in Lal Chowk and Jahangir Chowk area in Srinagar when the police resorted to a lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse demonstrators who shouted slogans in favor of Kashmir independence from India.
One women’s militant outfit Dukhtarne Millat (Daughters of Islam) had organized a procession of students of Govt College for women and a local girl’s high school to register their protest against the excesses of the police and security forces. As the students were demonstrating in the Lal Chowk area policemen intervened to disperse them. They refused to disperse and were joined by boys of a nearby school. The police resorted to a baton charge and fired teargas shells injuring several students.
A memorandum meant to be delivered to the UN military observers was snatched from the protesters by the police. This memo according to information here had sought UN intervention for the liberation of Kashmir.
Govt employees were on a two day pen down strike on Monday.
