NEW DELHI: An indefinite curfew was imposed in virtually the entire walled city here, on Jan.27, following clashes between members of two communities over the alleged “desecration” of a place of worship, police said.
At least two persons were killed and five injured when miscreants went on a rampage Setting ablaze shops, houses and a place of worship in the walled city, forcing authorities to re clamp indefinite curfew, police said.
Fire brigade sources said several shops were torched by miscreants in Chitli Kabar, Kucha Pandit and Hauz Qazi areas.
‘The trouble started at noon in Daryagan) area where a place of worship was “desecrated by members of another community.”
This led to riots in the Jama Masjid and Chandni Mahal arcas. The worst affected area was the lanes behind Golchacinema on the main Daryaganj road and Suiwalan, about one km inside the walled city, police said. Incidents of arson and stone throwing were reported from some parts of Jama Masjid, Sitaram Bazar, Chandni Mahal, Hauz Qazi, Chili Qabar and ‘Turkman Gatearea of the walled city, police said. The authorities who had earlier imposed curfew after the Ayodhya incident last month, had retained restrictions during night hours.
Tension was also reported in the Jafarabad Scelampur area of northeast Dethi, police added.
The killed man has been identified as Rajinder Prasad of Ghaziabad and the injured as kharaiti Lal of Hauz Qazi and Prem Sagar of Turkman Gate, according to hospital sources.
An irate mob indulged in arson following rumors that few pages of a holy book were allegedly tom. A place of worship was not on fire in Suiwalan area, residents said.
BOMBAY: Day curfew was re imposed in Dindoshi area of suburban Malad and patrolling by security forces intensified following incidents of arson and rioting leading to police firing in which two persons were killed and seven others injured.
