FREMONT,CA: Attracting a crowd of over 400) Sikh youth and adults, the Sikh Sewa Society hosted the Ist annual Sikh Community picnic on Scpt.4 at Fremont Central Park.

Designed to bring together the Sikh Community of the Bay Arca, the picnic was successful in providing a positive social environ= ment for Sikhs of all ages. The daylong event featured many events and races such as kho kho, tug of war, soccer, volleyball, and kickball, Punjabi music played throughout most of the after moon, with some youth and adults doing bhangra during the lunch hour. Food was provided free of charge.

Commenting on the day’s activities, Naunihal Singh of San Francisco said,” This is one of the best Sikh events I’ve attended in quite a while, It’s great to see Sikh children and adults having fun together.”

The picnic was intended as a kickoff event for the newlyformed Sikh Sewa Society, an organization comprised of concemed volunteers dedicated to fostering Sikh community spirit and to providing a strong peer support group for Sikh youth facing the challenges of growing up in America.

One feature activity that the Sikh SewaSocicty hasplannedis Sikh College and Career Day,” anevent aimed at encouraging Sikh youth to pursue college educations and professional careers. This event will be held in winter, 1993, Other activities include establishing a Sikh scholarship fund and a Sikh peer counseling center.
