NEW DELHI: The main operations of the Census 1991 the country’s decennial statistical exercise which began three weeks ago ended Feb 28 with almost 850 million people covered under this colossal survey.

The registrar-general and census commissioner of India A R Nanda told PTI that the entire exercise which involved a team of over 18 lakh enumerators and supervisory staff had been conducted “smoothly” and according to the schedule set by the census commission”.

He said the main census enumeration which began on February 9 ended at midnight Feb 28 but would be followed by five days of provisional rounds for a last check. The first provisional population figure would be made available by March 25 he said.

Commenting on the feedback he was received from different parts of the country the census commissioner said the enumeration work had been earned out satisfactorily in all states including Punjab and Assam.

The problem the census taker faced in the initial days was in the big metropolitan cities like Delhi Bombay and Calcutta where all members of the family went out of the house for work or other purposes.

In the big cities census enumerators therefore intensified their house visits on Saturdays and Sundays left notes or the form to be filled in and be posted to the local census office Nanda said.

The enumeration of Delhi’s homeless population began last night with census takers counting persons sleeping on pavements and railway stations.
