NEW DELHI: Prominent political personalities and human rights activists courted arrest here on Oct.7 demanding punishment to those guilty of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The protestor’s courted arrest near Papel Chowk on Parliament Street after the police prevented them from proceeding towards Rashtrapati Bhavan, where they had intended to make a protest rally. Among those courted arrest were Sikh Forum Chief, Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, journalist Rajinder Pun, Delhi Sikh Pratinidhi Board president Jaspal Singh, Janata Dal national general secretary Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Delhi Akali Dal (Mann) president Mohinder Singh.

Later, a delegation of the protestors submitted in the President’s office a seven point chanter of demands. Among other things, the memorandum demanded that the Home Ministry should be directed to register 21 cases, as recommended by the Jain Aggarwal committee, against Sajjan Kumar, MP, H.K.L.Bhagat and others, “The guilty should be prosecuted under the law,” the memorandum said.

The memorandum also demanded that the Delhi Administration should be directed to extend the term of the Jain Aggarwal committee and appoint a special prosecution agency to deal with the cases relating to the 1984 violence.
