CHANDIGARH: Feb.16 five election campaigners of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were killed and 17 others injured when militants opened indiscriminate fire near village Nawan pind Shokian in Jalandhar district of Punjab on Feb.16.

Elsewhere in the state, 12 per sons, two of them election campaigners and 2 communist party (CPI) leader, were killed while Bhagat Ram, a CPI (Marxist candidate for Phillaur (reserve) parliamentary seat, escaped an attempt on his life when militants exploded two bombs on the rout of his convoy in Batala police district.

The bombs exploded when the convoy was passing nearby a place of worship. No loss of life or property was reported.

A party of more than 20 BSP workers was campaigning for party candidate Om Parkash Sidhwan from Nurmahal assembly seat in an open vehicle, As the vehicle turned towards village Nawanpind Shokian, some car born militants opened fire with automatic weapons.

Three BSP campaigners died at the scene while two others succumbed to their wounds on way to a hospital.

Two election campaigners were gunned down by gunmen near village Badshahpur in Jalandhar district. They were canvassing for an independent candidate for the Jalandhar (south) assembly seat.

Gunmen shot dead CPI leader Waryam Singh near Jagraon in Ludhiana district Saturday night.

Two unidentified bullet riddled bodies were recovered from near village Aagowal in Batala police district on Sunday.

Militants shot dead one person in village Mann garh in Hoshiarpur district Saturday night.

In Ropar district, militants shot dead three home guards, near village Cheri an A local leader in village Sotal one person in village Paprali and another in village Sikh,

Militants blew up about two feet of rail track between Sunder Nagar and Golden Avenue colonies near Amritsar Saturday night while another bomb exploded near a hotel under Kotwali police station area. No casualty was reported.
