CHANDIGARH: Nine policemen had been arrested and 29 had been suspended in connection with 15 cases of death in custody in Haryana since July 1991, the Chief Minister, Bhajan Lal, informed the Vidhan Sabha.
One DSP, one inspector, two sub- inspectors, two assistant sub-inspectors, two head constables and one constable had been arrested. One DSP, two inspectors, three sub-inspectors, three assistant sub-inspectors, stables had been suspended.
In reply to a question by Chhattar Singh Chauhan (HVP), Bhajan Lal said that of the 10 cases registered for death in custody, one case had been cancelled, four were being investigated, three were pending in courts, in one case the accused had been acquit- ted and one could not be traced.
He added that during the period 45 persons had died in armed encounters. They were 36 militants, seven criminals and two constables. The criminals included Jitender Pehal and Randhir Sisar, both of them involved in the Lekhu kidnapping case.
