SRINAGAR: Abdul Ahad Wani, head of the law department of Kashmir University, was released by his abductors after 12 days in captivity while militants abducted Mohammad Maqbool Bhat of Sekiwan-Doda.
“The dismissal of police officials for their lapse will serve as any eye opener for others,” director-general of Jammu and Kashmir police B.S.Bedi, said.
He said “negligence in duty will not be tolerated and stern action will be taken against erring policemen.”
Three militants Khurshed Ahmad Dar, Riyaz Ahmad and Mushtaq Ahmad Gujri escaped from the heavily guarded police hospital.
Five militants, including “regimental commander” Farooq Ahmad Bhat and his secuty guard
and area commander “Jhon Mohammad” were killed in an encounter at Wagoora village of Badgam district on Sept.17, Bedi said.
The encounter occurred when security forces laid siege on the militants’ hideout and the subversives tried to shoot their way out. Two militants Mohammad Ismail and Abdul Rashid were nabbed, the police chief said. *The militant outlets operating in the Valley received a severe setback with the killing of their leaders,” the state police chief said.
The bullet riddled body of G.N.Sheikh was picked up from village Khandipora in Anantnag district, a resident of Arwani, was killed by militants, Bedi said.
The body of Mohammad Iqbal Qureshi, who was taken into custody by security forces on Wednesday, was handed over to the Baramulla police on Thursday amidst allegations by local residents that he had died during interrogation. Meanwhile, Kamal Kaur and her mother, Mohinder Kaur, were taken into custody by the security forces from Nowpor-Sharakwara in Baramulla district on Thursday.
Kamal Kauris reportedly the wife of a Punjab militant, and is wanted by the state police, officials said.
