NEW DELHI: Filing of nominations for elections to 529 seats in the Lower House and five state Assemblies began on a dull note Monday with only 106 people, mostly independents, submitting their nominations, reports PTI.

Prominent among them was the militant trade union leader Datta Samant who filed his papers from Bombay south central constituency as an independent. Thirteen aspirants filed their papers in western state of Maharashira.

The maximum number of. 86 nominations were filed in southern Tamil Nadu while 15 nominations were filed in Madhya Pradesh and 11 in Gujarat. Seven submitted their papers in Delhi.

Five states — Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Dikkim, Goa and Karnataka — and assembly constituencies (by elections) in Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Ketala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal will also go to poll simultaneously with the lower house elections. Filing of nominations to the assembly elections has also been tardy. Lower house polls in north eastern Indian state of Asam will not be held along with the rest of the country.
