AMRITSAR: Three special police officers (SPOs) and two home guards were gunned down by the militants in Harar village under the Ajnala police station about 20 km from here Nov 18.
In other incidents in the district and the neighboring police district of Batala, nine persons, including three policemen and two militants were killed Nov 17.
A senior police official here said that at least five militants came to a police post in Harar village on the pretest of meeting an pro why was already won over by them.
Before the other security personnel at the post could suspect anything, the militants opened fire from automatic rifles, killing five of them on the spot. One home guard jawan managed to escape. The SPO who had “colluded” with the assailants also deserted after the crime. One self-loading rifle, three 12 bore rifles and one 303 bore rifle was taken away by the militants,
The deceased were identified as Jagtar Singh, Ranjit Singh, Sham Masih (SPOs), Mr Iqbal Singh and Mr Darshan Singh both home guard men.
A Punjab police Sub Inspector Mukhtiar Singh and constable Virsa Singh were shot dead in Gharinda village Nov 17 by unidentified militants. Both were on leave. While the Sub Inspector was posted at Faridkot, the constable was in the security party.
Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Asal Uttar village in the Patti area Nov 17. One AK47 and one SLR were recovered from the site.
